| Natural Asthma Relief |
From The April 1999 Issue of Nutrition Science News:
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory,
antiviral, antioxidant and anti-tumor activity. In vitro studies show that
curcumin blocks the allergen- triggered release of inflammatory chemicals in
white blood cells taken from asthma patients. Although clinical trials have yet
to prove so; in vitro studies suggest that curcumin could help control allergic
diseases such as asthma. |

Curcumin for Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease, which is caused due to amyloid-induced inflammation. Researches have shown that curcumin is quite useful against Alzheimers disease. Researches have also shown that people taking these common anti-inflammatories have a decreased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
"The prospect of finding a safe and effective new approach to both prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease is tremendously exciting," Gregory Cole, MD, a professor of medicine and neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said in a news release. |

Curcumin and Crohn's disease
In a trial at Columbia University in New York, a pure curcumin preparation was given to five patients with Ulcerative proctitis and a similar number with Crohn's Disease, both inflammatory disorders. All proctitis patients improved, and reduced medication, and four out of five Crohn's patients had reduced symptoms. The researchers say results are encouraging and that they now need to be followed up. Just how curcumin could be protective is not clear, but one theory is that it interferes with the body's
production of cells that are involved in inflammation |
